The roman Pantheon

Posted in Rome monuments - August 2nd, 2011

The current shape of the roman pantheon, the oculus and portico of three ranks, is due to Emperor Hadrian who in 115 d.C. decided to rebuild of Pantheon because it was damaged by fire. The first roman Pantheon version was the work of Marcus Agrippa who in 27 a.C commissioned a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome, in fact Pantheon is an adjective meaning “to every god”. Also the building location was related with the myth, as the story goes, in that place Romolo, the founder of the city of Rome, soared in the sky with the angels with the assistance of one eagle.

In 608 d.C. the Byzantine emperor Phocas donated the building to Pope Boniface IV, the latter converted by temple to Christian church given the name of Santa Maria ad Martyres. The well-preserved is due at this event, in fact this event saved the roman pantheon from the abandonment and the worst of the spoliation that befell the majority of ancient Rome’s buildings during the Renaissance period like happened to coliseum which was pillaged.

In 1878 the roman Pantheon was chosen like long home by Sovoy Royal family, in fact here are buried the mortal remains of Victor Emmanuel II, Umberto I, Princess Margherita, but also the master Raffaello and Annibale Caracci, and the Baldassare Peruzzi architect.
The entrance to Pantheon is free and is open (Monday – Saturday 8:30/19:30 ; Sunday 9:00 – 18:00). The Roman Pantheon is located in Piazza della Rotonda and you can reach from metro station A Piazza di Spagna, if you are looking one accomadiotion near the Pantheon we suggest this hotel in center of Rome.
