Lux in arcana: the Vatican Archive shows its secrets

Posted in Events in Rome, International events in the Capital - November 22nd, 2011

Lux in arcana (Latin, literally “light in mysteries”) is an event without precedent: for the first time in the thousand-years-old story of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican Secret Archive will open its doors and show one hundred, precious documents to the public. These documents will be on display at Capitoline Museums of Rome in Piazza del Campidoglio 1 (Capitol Square) from March 1 to September 9, 2012.

And maybe Lux in arcana will be the only time when these documents will pass the doors of the Vatican Archive: manuscripts, codices and ancient parchments that narrate about conclaves and heresies, popes and imperators, crusades and excommunications, from VIII century AD to XX century.

Here you have some of the documents on display: the Dictatus Papae of Pope Gregorio VII, the deposition bull of Federico II, the excommunication of Leone X to Martin Luther, the public records of the trial against Galileo Galilei, the silk letter of the empress Helen from China, some selected documents concerning the “reserved period” of the Second World War.

To get to Capitoline Museums in the occasion of Lux in arcana, take the metro Linea A and get off at Colosseo (Coliseum) stop. And to comfortably enjoy this exhibition in Rome, it’s good to stay at the 4 star superior Atlante Star Hotel, in the centre of the Eternal City.

Rome, Poland and the Berlin Wall Fall: through theatre’s posters

Posted in Fairs and festivals in Rome and province - September 14th, 2010

The Polish theatre talk about itself at the Theatre House of Rome. The exhibition called “All about Theatre in a poster. Poland 1989-2009” seems to be unusual for a middle artistic sensibility. Nevertheless a date (1989) in the title has to call back immediately an event into your mind: the Berlin Wall Fall. This is what this exhibition, lasting till October 17th, wants to tell to his public: the historical changes made by the Great Wall Fall in the Polish nation through the artistic theatre poster.

This exhibition tells about the society transformation caused by the Wall Fall through an expressive medium. From the XIX century to the Wall Fall the theatre posters was where the most famous artist and the censors ones had been able to express themselves in the same way, far away from the censorship bar.

After the Danzig Facts and the Berlin Wall Fall the posters became the main way for the expression of new artistic energies and languages: some names like Wieslaw Walkuski, Rafal Olbinski, Stasys Eidrigevicius mark the distance between the after ’89 production and the before ’89 production symbolized by some artists like Henryk Tomaszewski and Jan Levica, the famous author of “Wozzeck”. Villa Medici in Rome makes Art of an art exhibition

Posted in Exhibitions in Rome and surroundings - August 24th, 2010

Villa Medici, the French School of Fine Art in Rome, presents an exhibition, lasting till the end of September, dedicated to the visitor experience’s enrichment: he will be driven along a tour made of heterogeneous artworks by Ellsworth Kelly and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Kelly, still living, took care about the exhibition management of his unpublished artworks and about the ones of the ex school headmaster Ingres, with the help of Éric de Chassey, the today school headmaster. The exhibition wants to show the tension that ties together a figurative and pedantic production with an abstract one. Kelli’s and Chassey’s original idea was to put the viewer in the critical point of the visual contemplation, where similarities and superimpositions die to let the universal true outcropping as a truth feeling. The viewer along the Villa Medici’s tour will rebound from an artwork to another without comprehension. Reason’s faculty will be astonished between Ingres and Kelly; the heart will be satisfy by his artistic perception. (more…)
